The NEHGS website is one of the most widely used online genealogical resources in the country. This site features nearly 3,000 unique searchable online collections, offering information on more than 300 million people. The extensive NEHGS Library catalog is also fully searchable through the site.
Library
The NEHGS Library, located at 99 Newbury Street in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood, is one of the nation’s leading research centers for genealogists of every skill level. In it are housed millions of documents, manuscripts, records, books, microfilms, photographs, artifacts, electronic resources, and other items that preserve and reveal our history.
Expert Staff & Services
Our staff of experts is available for a number of research services to help you with any challenges, questions, or ‘brick walls’ you may have in your research. Our staff specialize in a variety of ethnic and geographic areas such as New York, French and Atlantic Canada, Jewish, African American, Italian, English, Irish, Scottish, immigration, Native American, military research, and of course early and colonial New England research. For general research guidance and suggestions, NEHGS offers a free Ask a Genealogist service. We invite you to submit your reference question, and the genealogists on our staff will do their best to provide an answer.
Publications
NEHGS has an active publications program, publishing; genealogies and family histories, genealogical guides, compilations of records, many of them under the imprint of Newbury Street Press and the works of the Great Migration Study Project. Our titles reflect the Society’s mission of preserving and interpreting materials to document the history of families in America.
